you need to get in the habit of paying attention to maintenance. European cars *require* their scheduled maintenance. Japanese cars are more like American cars where you can blithely ignore things (until they break). But the payoff for the added care is in having a much more substantial car around you, one that is fun to drive and is great for the long haul--both in time and distance.
Japanese cars can also last a long time, but the interiors tend to die after about 5 or 6 years and parts can be outrageously expensive. I have not owned any Japanese cars, but as the resident gearhead among many friends and colleagues, I know a lot about what friends with Japanese cars deal with. They all ask about how and why I stick with Saabs, which they perceive as being costly to own. And when we compare costs over time or durability, the Saabs come out looking fine. And when they get in one of mine, or drive it, they realize the difference between a transportation appliance and an automobile.
Buy your 9-5 (we have an '03 SportWagon) pay attention to maintenance (even over maintain a bit) and you'll be fine.
