how to test a fuel pump, with pics Posted by bobc [Email] (#473) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bobc) on Sun, 30 Dec 2007 11:39:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Credit goes to SWEDCAR for the idea and the technique for measuring the health of a fuel pump. I did this today and thought I would post the results and some pictures.
Equipment:
- oscilloscope
- DC current probe/clamp. the kind that inductively measure the current flowing through the wire. Like this one:

I bought an old BK Precision Model 2120 'scope for $50. Virtually any 'scope will do here. Ebay has plenty of old, cheap oscilloscopes.
I borrowed the current probe, (a very nice Fluke 80i-100s) turns out that these are pricey (~$400).
I plan to test the fuel pump at each oil change or so, and post pictures. I hope to be able to see the pump slowly degrade rather than be left stranded by it.
