Most/all automotive engine oils are currently rated as SM by the American Petroleum Institute, whereas many of the oils marketed for diesel engine use are identified with the older SL tag.
Apparently too much anti-wear additive, from an engine burning copious amounts of oil, can damage the catalytic converter. The newer SM oils have less of these compounds to protect the car's converter. Diesel engines don't have converters so oils marketed for their use have more of anti-wear additives and are thus given the older SL rating.
Maybe it is all urban legend. Maybe the SL oils are better. My car's engine doesn't burn oil so I opt for the SL rating on the possibility it may offer better protection.
