I feel your pain. My '01 2.4 with 96K developed a slight noise at cold idle that was diagnosed as a fully-extended timing chain tensioner. Car had oil changed at every 10K for first 30k and then every 5K with full synthetic but still had stretched timing and balance shaft chains at 96K. Only way to fix completely was to remove engine (9000 had a much better design) and change the chains, sprockets, guides, seals etc. Fortunately I had an extended warranty that picked up the $2400+ cost. But as an owner of 6 Saabs, I have to say that the designers of the 9-5s engine compartment should be fired on the spot. While in the 9000 you could replace the chains and other parts with the engine in the car, you have to remove the engine for the 9-5. My last Saab (and I own a 9-3, a 9000, and 9-5 now)!
