What mileage on the cars you are looking at? If you are looking for the 2.3l engine, then sludge is an issue. Look for a service history with oil changes, preferably with full synthetic, every 5K or so. If the car has had the PCV retrofit that is a plus. If the engine has oil changes at 10K (Saab's recommendation) then beware. Longer intervals for oil changes mean more likelihood of having sludge and later problems with timing chain and balance shaft chain.
These cars have problems with water pumps, turbo chargers, cupping of the inside edges of rear tires, and the SIDs. But the bottom line is, if you own these cars plan on spending about $1200 per year on maintenance. But, if you take care of a 9-5, it will last a long time (if you buy a car that has been well maintained).
