I couldn't have said it better. Posted by B Millar [Email] (#1109) [Profile/Gallery] (more from B Millar) on Thu, 6 Mar 2008 12:35:27 In Reply to: Avoiding the V-6?, Stephen Goldberger, Thu, 6 Mar 2008 08:10:55 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
At $39k new for a 9-5 V6, I don't see how anyone would find it worth spending that much money just for the smoothness of the V6. But, now that they're a few years old they make really great cars. I would say to avoid the 1999 model year in general. If you're looking at 9-5's between 2000 and 2003, definitely go with a V6 if you can find one. The 9-5 V6 is basically immune to sludge, head gasket issues, head bolt problems, etc. The most expensive things I've run into on mine were the turbo and timing belt. And yes, after 2003 you don't have a choice, but Saab finally figured some stuff out with the 4-cyl and corrected the PCV (no more sludge, unless you're an idiot and never change the oil), gave all 4-cyls the Mitsubishi TD-04 turbo, which is far more reliable than the Garret GT-17's they had on the LPTs. One more V6 note, while yes it's expensive to replace the timing belt and tensioners every 60k, everything in there if very serviceable. On the 4-cyl. you may as well take the engine out of the car if you want to mess with the timing components. I have absolutely nothing against the 4-cylinder, I just think the V6 is a more reliable alternative. Check out some of the reviews on Edmunds if you want. They're not as Saab-biased as we are here, haha.
