I don't know that there are any years to particularly avoid. You may want to go with a certain year because of a feature not available earlier or later, however...

For all engines, past maintenance is very important. Oil changes are critical to longevity and avoiding sludge. The V6 needs to have the timing belt changed every 60k, along with some other bits which, if they go, take out the timing belt (though Saab only does the belt at 60k). Search this forum for "timing belt" or "sludge".

The V6 was available from mid-1999 through 2003. After that, only the 4 cylinder. The 4 was available in a variety of HP ratings over the years.

Chassis wise, the only thing that comes to mind to potentially avoid is some very early 1999s which had fixed caliper rear brakes (I think they re-used old stock left over from the Classic 900). Early on, they switched to the sliding caliper.

2002 saw the majority of chassis changes. Different front hub assemblies and steering members, (Aluminum vs iron), larger brakes on both the V6 and Aero (Aero actually got them a bit earlier), with ventilated rear discs. ESP (electronic stability program) integrates traction control, brake force distribution, electronic throttle to help avoid undesireable under-or over-steer conditions. And the 5 speed automatic trans. In 2002 they also stiffened up the suspension on all models, bringing the non-Aeros close to the -2001 Aero spec, and improving the Aero suspension.

There have been two major facelifts. The first in 2002, and the second in 2006, which brings also the latest interior/dash/radio/HVAC controls.

2002 also introduced the "Linear" and "Arc" models...

From all I've seen here, I don't think there's any particular year you need to think about avoiding.

Good luck in your search.
