We had the factory hitch on our '99 Wagon and always thought it placed the ball too close to the bumper. Because of this, we had to be extra careful when hitching up and when using our receiver mounted bike carrier. The Curt hitch we had installed on our 2003 (about $200) eliminated these problems since the receiver was extended slightly further from the bumper. Both worked equally well in towing our small sailboats and our Boston Whaler.
