Okay, so he's probably not all that ignorant about what a CPO warranty does or doesn't mean. That rules out ignorant. All that's left IMHO is that he's lazy or not very smart. Having bought a second-hand Saab at a Saab dealership where the salesman was both lazy AND not the "highest rev on the tach," I can understand how this happens. (In my case it was a new Saab franchise tacked onto an ancient and tottering Caddy dealership...now extinct.)
In my case, it was a CPO'd Aero with 27K on the odo, single owner, stellar Iris report, bought off lease and put up for sale at an unrealistic price. I figured that since the salesman wasn't bright enough to have all of the dash bulbs replaced, or to clean the car properly before the sale, it all boiled down to a matter of whether I thought the car was a good, solid Saab, destined to give me many years of relatively trouble-free service. I got the price down to a reasonable level, bought it, and never set foot in that joint again.
I brought it in to my local dealer right away, and the service writer smilingly took the keys and said he'd make sure everything was brought up to snuff, per the CPO. A day later, I got the car back, washed and vacuumed, all the little things fixed, and a bill for 0$. 34K miles later, I'm still glad I bought the car when I did.
I think you have to weigh all of the "funny" stuff about this vehicle with your own sense of comfort. With that much mileage on the car, there's just too much mental heavy lifting, IMHO.
