Mike:

I wish you the very best with your 2000 9-5 Aero. I had a 2000 9-5 Aero on which I accumulated 280K miles, and replaced last August with a new 2007 9-5 Aero.

With proper preventive maintenance you should enjoy many trouble-free miles.

1. I would upgrade the PCV to #6.
2. The mileage on your car is very low, however, age alone does effect some components such as plastic and rubber hoses. The upper radiator hose and the intercooler output hose may show signs of softening. Replacement is an easy DIY job. Carefully, check vacuum hoses for cracks or wear due to chaffing.
3. When you get up to ME, a much colder climate than NC, observe whether the car warms up (and you get good heater output) after driving 10-15 minutes. Lukewarm heater output after 20-30 minutes is a hint.....replace the thermostat. If you do a coolant replacement at 60K miles I'd include a thermostat.
4. Inspect the condition of the serpentine belt and pulleys carefully. Although they have only 52K miles, they are 8 years old. Replacing them prematurely may not be a bad idea. When one of those components go you have to get towed. The symptom is the battery symbol and lack of power steering; not as immediately apparent is the shut down of the water pump...running without coolant circulating can cause very expensive damage.
5. IMHO modifying the oil pickup allows larger dirt and metal particles to circulate and reach other parts of the engine where they can accelerate wear; I wouldn't do it. PCV upgrade #6, making sure the engine warms up quickly (thermostat condition), good preventive maintenance and use of Mobile-1 full synthetic oil might be your best line of defense against sludge.

Send me an email if you want a list of the maintenance items I encountered over 280K miles not including preventive maintenance and normal wear items. None of the items on the list appeared before 100K+ miles, excepting the waterpump at 80K miles.

Best of luck,

Herb Hirsch
