There is no doubt that the price at dealer auctions is appealing. Want to know how much? Borrow and pretend to trade in the car you are looking at - add a couple or few hundred $ of "cushion" and that's what that car will likely bring at auction. BUT, what is the history, and what is the condition of the car you are buying. Chuck goes to auctions every week, and wrote that looking at a car at auction was like reading a book, most of which had very bad endings. Plus, if Chuck makes a mistake, well he owns a body and mechanical repair shop. What with sludge being quite the issue with 9-5s, I think I'd pass on direct auction purchases of a used 9-5. No doubt there are other cars (such as a 9-3 Sport Sedan) which have been less problematic and where a visual inspection for hidden crash damage and overall condition might make for a safer bet.
