Real quick and easy. (even though this thread's long).. It took me about 5 minutes to remove the trim piece. First I pried up the rubber thing around the shifter. I thought it was going to be a flexible rubber gasket type of thing that I was going to have to painstakingly wedge back in but it turned out to have a nice hard plastic base to it that just clipped it into place. You'll see what I'm talking about when you actually do it... Then I pulled out the cubby under the seat heater switches. To do this just shove a small flat-head screw driver under the bottom of the cubby tray right in the middle. With the bottom bowed up it will slide right out. Push the seat heater/cooler/blanks out from behind, unplugging them. Removing the cubby exposes 2 torx screws to unscrew. Then shift to neutral, and use that small flat head screw driver again to wedge in between the wood piece and the grey console along the most rearward edge (right between the ignition hump and the depression under the handbrake lever. It pries right up from there with some not-so-strong clips holding the rear in. You can see the clips to the right and left of the corners of the shifter in the picture below. Unplug the connectors for the 12v plug, its light, and the lock switch. Then I used one of those free tooth brushes the dentist gives you that are way too small to actually use and scrubbed away. Good luck!
