Head gasket... too hard to DIY?

Hi Folks,
Well on my list has been to get a set of head bolts for my 2000 Aero, but as yet I have not done it. A few months ago it started to use water, and I feared the worst. It seemed to stabilise and I didn't use the car much so it sort of slipped but after an inspection hoping to find a leaking heater valve, this morning I had a closer look and saw some water marks around the turbo.
I took off the heat shield and started the car and sure enough water formed around the flange between exhaust manifold and turbo, but soon burned away. I can't see anywhere this would be coming from if not the exhaust ports, there's no obvious way for water to get there. I'll have a better look next start but it looks a lot like a head gasket.
Any feeling for the possibility of it resealing if I just get new head studs and retension the head? Pretty unlikely I guess, especially considering how long it's been like that.
How much of a headache is it to do the head gasket yourself? I did the oil pan inspection a while back and had to problems, and this seems easier as most of it is from above. Are there any special tools required or anything silly like that?
The car has 142,000km.
TIA
Steve
