I've always thought a 9-5 Aero had a better ride than any OG9-3 like your '00 9-3SE. Though firmer sprung, the 9-5 has much better compliance with fully independent rear suspension instead of the twist beam.
You could go with 16" wheels. You could even try your 16's from your 9-3.
