Wow, thanks for posting those pictures...it was a huge help! I'm not sure if I really completely understood where the port was until I saw your post. I almost thought it was the green one! I bought a complete kit on eBay which included 3 12oz cans of R134, 2 cans of oil, a Super Seal kit, and the same hose/gauge assembly that you have. Fortunately, I didn't experience any problems with the gauge. It worked like a charm. My system started out completely emplty too but only ended up needing 2 cans of R134 and 1 of the oil before it was blowing air colder than my freezer. By weight, I think another can would have been too much.
Anyway, here's a couple of observations for anyone else doing this job. Hope it helps.
1) The re & re of the grill and light assembly in the pictures might look overwhelming. It isn't. In fact, it's very easy, Two torx screws, two bolts and it's out. It goes back together very logically too. Nice design.
2) The cans of R134 are taken up by the sytem quite slowly. I was kind of surprised because I thought it would just woosh into the system in a few seconds. It took several minutes. The can stays quite cold during the entire process and then warms up to the ambiant outside temperature when it's done.
