Hi: I am looking at doing the same thing for a 99 9 5 and have been researching this. There is a good article on how the Saab audio systems work. This board does not allow me to reference the article, I will try and post a pointer in a reply. The main thing is between the head end and the amp Saab uses PRO AUDIO instead of "Normal Audio" like at home and most other car systems. The amp is located near the passenger door opening near the right foot.
So, you can do the following.
1) use the Saab amp, but purchase a converter from normal to pro audio. I am still looking for one to test.
2) use the head end only and tap into the speaker wires by the saab amp and disconnect the Saab amp
3) use the head end with a separate amp, replace the SAAB amp taping into the wires by the amp.
I have seen some harnesses out there on ebay, etc. I am getting close to purchasing one to see how good it is, but not sure how it will deal with the Pro Audio problem.
If you don't have the HK system (6x9 speakers in the back deck) and you want speakers in the back deck, you will have to run wires back there, this is fairly easy.
I have converted the non-HK amp to HK by purchasing a used HK amp, soldering wires in the amp for the back speakers and then running the wires for the speakers to the back and then putting in some 6x9 lower end speakers. This seems to work fine since the amp is only sending back sub-woofer audio to the back speakers.
I think that I wrote this up, search for ort11 / jeffo2 on this board.
Then of course you will have to find a way to mount the new head end. I have not done this yet...
I am going back and forth from a 1 din to a 2 din unit right now.
The requirements for the system that I want to put in are
1) BlueTooth
2) Hands Free Navigation with no nav dvd
3) USB support
4) MP3 on USB / CDROM
5) DVD playback
6) XM radio
7) AM / FM
8) Multiple in support for CB / HAM / other devices
9) Retain steering wheel audio controls if necessary.
I have a couple of units in mind, but will see how it goes.
