I presume you are talking about a 9-5 Sedan, rather than a wagon, yes?
The factory Saab roof racks for the 9-5 have feet on each side which have pins that go into the holes you noted. A bolt is tightened on the rack bar (using the end cap, IIRC), compressing the sides together, and keeping the rack in place. Locking is accomplished by locking the car doors over the rack feet. The pins bear the load. Nothing touches the roof (unlike the Thule bars which people insist on getting...).
Many Thule accessories (and Saab Accessories) fit the Saab roof rack bars. I know there are "load stops" that prevent the load from shifting side-to-side. I don't think there are any roller devices available, but I don't know for sure.
