In addition to the others' comments, if you take the seat bottom off, you will have more room in the back seat footwell.
The cargo floor can also be removed to gain another 3-4 inches of space. Shoving small things in the spare compartment might help little
Also, I think you have unrealistic expectations. If the SPG could barely fit 2 people plus stuff, adding a wagon back will only give you a little more space (similar length, height car). Fitting a third person plus luggage might be tight.
I did a road trip in mine with 3 people, 3 road bikes (INSIDE the car), plus luggage. It was tight, but we made it from Chicago to Georgia and back. (we stayed in a cabin for a week).
I was extremely impressed with the car after that. I don't think I have a good idea of what you were trying to fit, though.
