Thanks for the reply. I actually don't want to modify the grate at all; I just want to drill a small hole in the bottom of the vent itself behind the grate to trace a wire through.
I have a ProClip mount that fits over this vent--so if I can get a wire through it I can hardwire my GPS. Here's a photo to depict what I have in mind.
It doesn't look like the vent behind it though comes out very easily...
