I agree with the people who are encouraging you to consider a new engine -- IF the rest of the car is in great shape. You should ask yourself, "With a new engine, can I get at least three more years out of my car without add'l major repairs?" You can't get a new car for $4,000, so the fix-it option makes sense, I'd say.
But I'd also look around for what's available. Just browsing through Saab and dealer sites, I see a lot of attractive deals on cpos. Maybe it's time to think of a well-cared-for '05. At least, find out how much $$$ you're looking at.
It's a bit of bad luck, but don't let anyone try to whip you into a panic. As the buyer of either services or a new car, you're The Decider, as the saying goes.
