My experience of 2 years and 35K miles of ownership with a 98' 528i was excellent, with very little to complain about. I replaced the water pump, and thermostat, new tires and wiper blades. I bought a BMW tool to reset the maintaince/oil change indicator bar graph, so I wasn't chained to the dealer/German shop for oil changes and the "SERVICE I II". Which on those, you can do some yourself, but some things are best left to a professional. I didnt need a car for a while and sold it off.
The 99' 9-5 V6 has been a much different story! Between the standard 9-5 gremlins (Code 8 A/C, SID pixels, fuel pump, siren) i also had fun with the trans committing suicide! If it were not for this message board and swedecar, I would probably looked for something else to drive.
I love my saab, and it does make me smile..just not in the wallet. The newer 9-5 owners may have less issues, but a 2001- E39 (5series) before the major facelift is something Id seriously consider.
good luck!
