Currently own two 9-5s, my '04 Arc and my wife's '03 Linear wagon. My prior car was a '99 528i, which I owned for many years. First, BMW and Saab parts are similar in price - expensive either way, any difference is negligible. If the car he's buying isn't CPO, he will have to find a good indy mechanic. My Saab indy is $85/hour, my BMW guy was $90/hour (Boston-area). Based on the cost of parts and labor, it's a wash between the two. My experience, which of course is limited to the cars I own(ed), is that BMW is more reliable, with fewer small, irritating problems than Saab. The other issue is the driving experience - there is simply no comparison between the two. A BMW straight six alone is worth the money. And I got 28 mpg in my 528i, while the Saab gets 26 mpg, exact same commute. Don't get me wrong, the 9-5 is a great car, and is better than most others for the money, but my experience is that a BMW is at a different level.
