I am an avid defender of cruise control, even in rolling terrain...I don't buy into the argument that our foot is better than the computer. The way I explain it is that people say that we can anticipate better where the pedal needs to be in rolling hill conditions, well, if you have cruise control you on can still do that!!! Also, people don't let the speed drop in uphill conditions (not rational people anywyas), people tend to maintain the speed, or increase the speed on the uphill, to not let the car stall (exagerating here). I hate when there is a climbing lane and I have to use it to pass people on the "fast" passing lane.
Set the cruise control but have your foot always ready is the best option for increasing fuel economy (or like most people call it hypermiling).
I'll wait for the sea of people to tell me I'm wrong.... :)
