Any audible pinging or knock is bad in my book, because if you can hear it then it is close to doing damage. Maybe not much, maybe not right away, but on the edge of it. It is pre-igniting, and after time it will take it's toll. Plus, you may lose MPG since the knock sensor will retard the timing to try and prevent it from happening. And for that reason you will definitely lose performance.
Why bother - to save $1.50 on a $70 fill? I hope everyone doing this realizes that it costs somewhere between 45 - 60 cents PER MILE to drive these cars, when you add it all up (Edmunds, KBB, etc). The savings between MID-GRADE and PREM at 20-25mpg is roughly 1/2 cent per mile, or about 1% of your total operating cost. Is it worth it?
