I have also come to the conclusion that for the most part, fixing a car is cheaper than buying new. Our 1993 900s has had an unbelievable number of repairs over the years (way above average for a C900) - just about everything is new now (2 major engine rebuilds, tranny, brakes 3x, cooling system etc etc.)... When I add up the purchase cost + repairs over all the years, the ownership is about the same as leasing a Honda Civic (which is pretty bad). Now many people would want the reliability of a leased Honda for the $$, but the Saab is way more useful, fun, and safe.
If you like the car but you're worried about repair costs, the trick is to find a good indy (or diy what you can). If we had done all that work at a dealer we would be double the cost easily!
Also, you've got an SE which is a V6 and you're looking at a turbo 4 in the newer car. Different set of problems. Depends what you're more comfortable with... imho, 2001 is a nicer year aesthetically (esp. with ventilated seats like yours), but 2005 has a lot of incremental improvements reliability-wise...
cheers,
James...
