I'd keep one of them and sell the other. I also wouldn't bother carrying them around until you've got 30K or 40K on the newly replaced units. It would be very rare to have both die at the same time - you'd most likey have months or years before the other one died, giving you plenty of time to replace it.

To further extend their life, you should have the latest software revision downloaded into the car's computer. It drives the DIC more gently, and adds a layer of diagnostics to the system. The MY2003 V-6, with revised software but old hardware, had half the failure rate as the 2002 version, according to the documents GM supplied to NHTSA. 2003 4 cylinder cars had nearly zero failure rate (4% over 10 years, IIRC), again according to the documents supplied to NHTSA. This compares with a failure rate of over 80% for the worst year (2000 or 2001, I forget which). There is no documentation for combining the new hardware with the old software, the configuration that resulted from the recall in most cases.

Also two suggestions for optimizing reliability. The crank position sensors tend to die somewhere between 50K and 150K, and they often fail without throwing a code. Seems the CPS is what tells the computer that the engine is rotating, and it can't tell the difference between a no-signal condition and a no-rotation condition. Also the heater bypass valve tends to fail on much the same schedule and does so dramatically, vomiting the coolant onto the pavement in "quarts per hour". About everything else seems reliable, or at least predictable and doesn't immobilize you without warning. Even battery life is good - my 9-5 is the first Saab I ever owned (so far) where the battery outlived the warranty.
