I had an '01 and an '02, both with manual transmissions. The '02 was much better. Looks are subjective, and that's up to you, but the '02 had a better feel, handling wise. I think they actually made some suspension improvements that year. The '01 had a few minor glitches that were frequently documented on this board (thumping gas tank, hooting AC expansion valve, instrument cluster rattle, etc.). The '02 didn't have any of these. MOST IMPORTANT, the '01 had a problem with it's gear snychro's (third gear)which Saab developed a fix for. The '02 did not have this problem. If the '01 you buy has or develops the synchro problem, there's no warranty, and you're out of luck.
By the way, ESP was NOT standard on '02's. It only came with the premium package (which my car didn't have). If you really want ESP, make sure the car has the package (look for a memory driver'seat).
