Oil Pump Conversion?

This mechanic I've gone to a couple times has highly encouraged me to do an oil pump conversion where he replaces the small mesh filter over the oil pump with one with larger diameter holes. He says the smaller mesh filter clogs up from carbon and sludge build-up and that this conversion would virtually eliminate any chance starving my engine of oil. I have a 1999 with just under 100k miles. It's a $350 job. Any thoughts?
