I'd just treat the problem that creates the carbon and sludge in the first place (extended oil change intervals, nonsynthetic oil, etc), rather than risk carbon making it through the screen and damaging the oil pump.
If you want larger holes, you can drop the sump and use an awl to make the holes in the screen bigger.
If you want to spend the $350 then install the oil sump with the removable panel that allows you to access and clean the screen periodically.
