The correct marks are lined up with the marks on the timing cover backside.

I hope you haven't removed the belt already before verifying this and marking the correct notches you're working with??!!

If you haven't rented the GM tool for the timing belt, do so. Even though it may seem like overkill, it's the surest way to avoid disaster.

I rented mine (did the job a couple weeks ago) from Logan Diagnostics. Not sure the web address but they do have a website and they're very helpful.

I'll attempt to post a couple of pictures of the camshafts (not my pictures so apologies to the mystery source of the pics) BUT these are from either a Saturn or Catera so it's possible they are different from ours (wouldn't think so). The pics are of varying quality but they seem to show that the unused marks are closer to one another than the proper marks are.
