cold when it's being done. Some folks recommend draining the old coolant, filling with plain water, running the engine till warm, drain, repeat, then fill with coolant. This ensures the thermostat will be open and permit a complete flush.
I did this once, and the only reason I don't think I'd do it again is that you're rapidly cooling hot parts every time you fill with clean (cold) water. I doubt the flush was responsible, but the engine in question had a lot of oil leaks, including the head gasket, after that procedure.
Maybe a good alternative would be to remove the thermostat after draining the original coolant, then use the reverse flush with cold water? In the V6's case, that would be a tough job since the thermostat is buried and not removable without leaving off the pipe it's integral to.
So I've simply come to believe in draining the old, filling with new coolant, and leaving it at that.
Love to hear what others practice!
