Regardless of toe-in, if camber goes too negative you'll chew up tires like Alpine did. It's less expensive to replace springs or install shims.
I disagree that shims are band-aids. Most cars have camber adjustment; ours for whatever reason do not. Whether your fanny's a half inch higher or not, you just want the wheels to be relatively vertical to provide better handling and eliminate abnormal tire wear. Shims are Saab's strategy for doing this.
All I can say is that it's worked for me and many others. I also had front camber adjustment bolts installed. I was very pleasantly surprised at how dramatic the improvement in handling ws after making the camber adjustments.
