I'd been told that the starting price in the USA for the 2010 9-5 will be "around $50K" by someone who should know. Bear in mind that this car will be powered by a V-6 Turbo, possibly direct injected, and while based on the same architecture (aka "platform") as the Opel Insignia, it will have its own sheet metal, suspension, power train, and interior. Those who have driven prototypes say it's wonderful. The "Aero" model will likely have XWD and even more power and luxury. That said, with the 9-3 being downsized for its next iteration, if fuel economy continues to be an issue, there is room for a less expensive 4 cylinder model. 4 cylinder (and diesel) cars, and cars with less expensive interior trim will be made for Europe, so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to expect them to be introduced in the USA with time. Meanwhile, they need to reposition the Amercian perception of the brand out of the "between a VW and a Volvo" range and into the Audi range. A low priced car at the intro won't do it.

With sales of the current model dwindling to under 200 per month, I think GM is not planning on the 9-5 to be a significant volume seller in the USA. With the currency rates as they are, a lower price is not in the cards. Rather, they are putting their USA marketing eggs into the 9-4 basket, with the 9-3 in a holding pattern until the next revision, which may also be made Stateside if the currency situation holds.
