Same thing happened to me, but with the SID showing almost 40 miles to empty.
The dealer it was towed to put gas in, and told me it was my fault for believing the SID.
A week or so later the dealer I bought it from ran the codes, found a faulty sending unit and replaced it.
That solved the problem.
