Thule also makes "load stops," which attach to the crossbars and allow you to easily keep things from sliding sideways - half the battle. You will still need to figure out a way to keep the roof load from moving forward or back. I suggest a LOT of heavy duty rubber straps, which you can get at the same big box stores as the lumber.
FWIW, I have a 9-5 Aero sedan with the Saab roof bars. I recently picked up a really HUGE white board for my business (it's about 4 x 8 feet or so...) and managed to get it back to my studio on the racks. Two bungees at front and two more at back to prevent front/back movement, and about 6 more to hold the thing down to the racks. Although I felt like I was going to take off, the board didn't move at all during its 20 minute adventure.
Don't go for a cheaper alternative - get the Saab crossbars for your wagon.
