It's all about CCA on the battery- (more) Posted by Pete [Email] (#2000) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Pete) on Sun, 31 Dec 2000 16:03:07 In Reply to: 9-5 battery and cold weather starts, Steve, Fri, 29 Dec 2000 11:02:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
You have a defective battey or one without much cranking power. If the battery is ok try some Mobil 1 or other synthetic oil, things turn over much easier. If you have to buy a new battery read on if you don't know much about car batteries.
The colder it gets, the less power a battery can put out. My car starts pretty decent here in Northern MN with the original battery. We have had -20 to -30 all too many mornings regularly, today the high might make it to zero.
The brand of the battery doesn't matter much, the CCA it has does. Any battery puts out about 30% less cranking power at 0 degrees vs. 70 degrees. If you buy a new battery, careful what you buy. Some are rated with CA (Cranking Amps @ 70 degrees) vs. CCA (Cold Cranking Amps @ zero degrees). Sometimes batteries rated by CA have the CCA in the fine print. Problem with the SAAB 9-5 is that it takes a group 91, I think. And I called Exide and they don't even stock one battery in my area to fit my car and the universal batteries that have 900+ CCA won't fit, too tall. PS, I have no idea what the CCA of the battery SAAB sends with a new car, I'll have to look.
