I had a 9-5 (V6, not Aero), and now have a Volvo S60R.
First, the price on the SR is OK, but consider that you can get 2006 and 2005 models at auction, with plenty of warranty, for over $10K less than that offered price.
Things to know about the S60R...
1) the stick is much more satisfying to drive for most than the geartronic, although in the '07 model this is less of an issue as Volvo does not limit the torque in 1st and 2nd gears in the '07.
2) the turning radius of the SR is H-U-G-E, I mean school bus huge. If you park in tight spaces often, be sure you keep this in mind. There is no such thing as pulling right in in an SR, expect 3-point parking every time.
3) I have the 18" Pegasus rims (and a set of 17" Pegs for winter as well). Personally, I find these some of the best looking stock rims out there, but they scrape and fall victim to curb rash VERY easily, so if you are a frequent parallel-parker, be aware of this. They also tend to bend easily if you hit road damage.
I have found the ride quality of the SR to be significantly stiffer than the SAAB, even in "comfort" chassis mode. Sport and Advanced chassis modes are even harsher, even brutal at times. This is all a good thing if you like a firm ride, or intend to track the car on occasion, but can be tiresome if your daily driving routes are rough.
If you have mods in mind, the SR is a great starting template. There are some great Volvo-specific mod outfits out there (IPD, Evolve, etc.), with a good variety of upgrades available for the SR. However, if you may have to temper your enthusiasm if keeping your warranty 100% effective is a need.
Volvo drives like a much heavier car, feels tank like at times.
Sound systems: both are excellent
Of course the R is AWD, which is a big plus if you live in a snow area.
If you really want to get a good idea about the R, stop by the R forum over at swedespeed.com...the owners there are very very knowledgeable, and some seem to do little other than drive and post on the forum. Ask your pricing question there and you will get some interesting answers.
In the end, I don't think you can go wrong with either car. It's really a matter of driving both and going with whichever feels right for you.
