I've looked over the posts below and compared with my own experience and would only add two comments:
1. The problem is definitely corrected by applying a small amount of lube to the splined joint on the steering column.
2. How permanent this repair is seems to depend entirely on the quality and characteristics of the lubricant. In my case I spent extra and used a high quality, very viscous silicone disc brake lube which I reasoned would last a long time and be impervious to temp changes. 4 years 45,000 miles later, everything is just fine.
Just as an aside, I marvel at dealers who replace the entire steering column to correct this problem. I can see nothing on that particular part of the shaft that could ever wear out.
