My recollection is that yes, the spline was very lightly lubed. I could only guess about what type of lube - it was quite thin. And in theory, there would really not need to be a lot since there is very little back-and-forth movement (maybe none at all) of the two pieces of the shaft once they are coupled together. But remember, the problem we're trying to fix here is a subtle, but annoying, "click" that is transmitted through the steering wheel when it is turned. It's my theory that an application of thick, viscous lubricant takes up any slack between the splines and dampens any internal movement. It's not applied to make the splines slide easier. That's my theory, at least. As to what Saab would recommend, remember too that most Saab dealers do not even acknowledge this as a problem (mine didn't), don't know its origin, sometimes toss out the whole steering column in an effort to correct it (if it's on warranty) or tell the customer to live with it (if it's not on warranty). If memory serves, I believe it was Anders at Swedecar that originally came up with the solution. You could go back through the posts.
