If I recall correctly, and I could be wrong as I'm not a 9-3 nut, the 9-3 air filter is one of those flat rectangular jobs, right? The 9-5 filter is a round cylinder and was redesigned a while back to have more surface area and greater air flow (see picture below). I doubt the K&N allows much more flow. If I were you I would just replace the existing paper filter with another and get the updated intake snorkel from Genuine Saab. The thing goes from behind the front grill down to the air filter box and was changed in 2004 to be bigger. I don't think you'll see drastic performance changes with an open intake, a lot of people just do it for the sound, which I personally don't care for.
