Since the main complaint about using CR123 batteries is the short service life, and the resultant PITA factor of access.
Why not solder a lead to the battery terminals on the circuit board and run it to battery holder in a more convenient location. Battery life will still stink, but replacement would be trivial.
There are many waterproof flashlights that use these cells. Remove the bulb, and convert one to a weatherproof battery holder.
Anyone tried this yet? If not, why not?
Mike
BTW CR123 batteries are available quite reasonably at BOTACH (dot) COM
