How this poll is said to be biased??? It seems reasonably random to me, based on random votes from people on this board.
And we do not need to count every car on the road for prediction.....and that's why people do statistical analysis. But to better predict potential life, more data points to failure (i.e. mileage) would be great. Anyway, I find gathered data very interesting and informative.
I think actual failure rate would be relatively small, or SAAB/ GM should have jumped on it and come up with an engineering fix by now, after over 10 years on production. Typically tenth of incidents per thousand would trigger a corrective action, so my guess is that the failure until 50,000 miles (= warranty period) would probably be well under 10%, more likely to be 2-3% at most.
From someone's pic, failure mode seems to be rupture of the bottom diaphragm, and based on no 'engineering fix' I guess the root cause may be isolated to quality issues or under limited application conditions that could somehow cause excessive load on the diaphragm. I did not like the valve design that could allow catastrophic coolant loss upon failure, though.... I would expect more redundancy from SAAB, with an aircraft heritage.
