Welcome,
we have had some discussions in the past on the 9000 board! I made the switch about 3 or 4 months ago now from my 94 9000 Aero to a 2001 9-5 Aero and love it!
I would recomend anything over a 2000 in a 9-5, but service records are important, the 4cly has many sludge issues but easily fixed if caught in time. the 9-5 MUST use synthetic oil, if the car hasn't had it I would keep looking, or find one that has had 3000k oil changes! I found a 2001 that was spotless, not one drop od oil anyplace in the engine bay, and I got lucky, so far it's been great. I also bought a 99 with several small oil leaks and a bad turbo, turns out it had major sludge also, I sold it to a buddy and he pulled the timming cover and replaced the balance sprockets, chain and tensioner, only cost him about $600 in parts (including used turbo) but he did the work himself, now he has a good car.
if I were looking for another 9-5 I would offer to pay for a oil change in the car and use the coat hanger trick to check for sludge,(basically root around in the pan and see what comes out), also down the dipstick tube.
I am not a v-6 fan, but the 9-5 V6 is not like the 9000, much better just stay on the Tbelts and tensioners.
like any car the 9-5 has some issues but nothing I have found that isn't easily fixed, If I recall you are a good DIY'er,
most DIY repairs i found to be quite simple on the 9-5
