Some might argue that the 2002/2003 is the absolute best year (best-looking, no decontenting), and they'll find plenty of people to argue with.
After 170,000 miles, just about anything is suspect, on ANY car.
The 5-sp auto was first used in the 2002, an excellent auto, and the problems listed on this board are very few and far between. The 4-spd auto also seems to be relatively trouble-free, and works very well.
The auto has to be a little slower than manual, but the 9-5 uses drive-by-wire, combine that with "Sport" mode, and you won't believe how responsive this auto is. This car has quite a few "stick or nothing" converts.
I don't recall seeing many PVC valve complaints (or check engine lights in general) here either, but the PVC system changed quite a few times before SAAB (appears) got it right. You definitely want PVC fix #6.
