The automatic on these cars is very good and should last a very long time. Saab gear ratios are well chosen, so the automatics are still enjoyable to drive. If you're a purist, you may still want a stick...
However, it is really important that the engine has been well maintained - really really needs the latest PCV kit and even so, needs regular oil changes with full synthetic to avoid sludge buildup... given what the seller said, I would be concerned about this car. A sludged engine is very expensive to deal with, but for the right price (if everything else is great) it might be worth it. Get it checked for sludge before purchase so you can price accordingly or walk away! Do a search on this board for "sludge" and you'll find all the info you need. There are other things you should check for as well (turbo, sid, etc)...
Also note, 2002 was a transition year, and some changes were made in production early on, so later cars that year are a little better (check the production date - inside driver's door). It is a pretty good year overall. The 9-5's are nice cars...
good luck!
James...
