ACC temp control

System has been calibrated - several times - no faults. So I had to do a 250 mile biz trip today. On the drive to my destination - Temp was set at 68 and I was comfortable - outside temp was 28 degrees. Different story on the return trip - had to lower the temp setting to 58 to get the cabin cool, or better stated to stop the heat and bring cool outside air into the cabin. then it eventual got too cool and had to retrun to 66 degrees to be comfortable. Then I stopped for about 10 minutes and when I got on the road again the whole cyle repeated itself - way too hot at a 66 degree setting, had to go down to 58 to cool things off then eventually retrun to 66 degree setting.
Is there any sensitivity or differential setting with respect to temperature control ? Or is this just the ACC temp sensor showing it's age, car is 1999 9-5 SE, 125 k miles. Or is there anything I can do regards this. In the way of commentary - I much much much prefer rotary controls to buttons - even if the rotary dials are a manual system. I'm glad to see that Saab finally replaced the push buttons, but with both of my 9-5s (1999 & 2004) I'm stuck with the antiquated pushbutton design.
thanks
