I think the term/slang came from the greeting "what is up". Which was used about a year ago by a phone company using three back guys. It then branched to a beer company. I am sure there is more to the story if you following commercial advertising closer than John and myself.
When I mentioned it as a joke as a personal license plate I was almost coerced in getting it. I received many compliments and acknowledegements from my Saab friends and non-Saab friends.
