Serp Belt and Pullies

I am going to change the serp belt, tensioner and idler pully soon. This will be the first time doing this in a Saab. I have a 2003 2.3lpt and currently it has the short belt and I am fine with the idle vibrations, they are not all that bad. So I think I'm going to stick with the short belt for now. I've changed belts and pullies in my other cars.
According to the WIS, I need to jack up the engine a bit. Those who have changed the belt and pullies, do I really need to do this? I have small hands and never really had access issues with other cars, but is it really that tight? I welcome any tips and tricks if you have them.
TIA!
