I went through the same hesitation you have. I tested the ES300 and the Saab 9-5 2.3 lpt. Mine is the 1999 se model (170 hp 4 cyl) and I dared to test it against the 6 cycl ES. I bought the Saab. The Lexus is quieter, whether this is from the tires/ road noise or wind I don't know. However I objected to the shape of the Lexus (looked like every other car out there) and the lack of headroom. OK, I could have lowered the seat but then felt I was sitting in a hole! The main reason I went Saab was the sheer enjoyment of the driving experience. It is just fun to drive and even though I have the automatic the Turbo does what it is supposed to and in conjunction with the torque this car does indeed move. If you want a car that will run forever the Lexus will do that but it will be boring compared to the Saab. To be very honest the only disappointment I have with Saab is that I have had to have some repairs (under warranty, but the parts should not have failed to start with and this meant 3 or 4 trips back to the dealer). These repairs were to the computer display module (twice), sun roof, heater (was blowing cold air). Hope this helps.
