We owned a 2000 9-5 (since sold to our son)and the spark plug change interval for that car was 30,000 miles. We subsequently bought a new 2004 9-5 Aero (that came with the free 3 year/36,000 mile maintenance program) and I was surprised to learn that the spark plug replacement interval for the 2004 9-5 had been lengthened to 45,000 miles. I have a feeling that GM changed the interval to avoid having to give the owners a free spark plug change during the free maintenance program. I have routinely re-gapped the spark plugs at 15,000 mile intervals (at which point the gaps tend to get out of spec) and then installed new plugs every 30,000 miles.
At 36,000 miles I can almost guarantee you that your plugs are gapped beyond the specification. Given the low cost of new plugs, and the ease of replacing plugs on the 9-5 4 cylinder engine, I would install some new spark plugs before you do anything else.
